Spinning Yarn And Weaving Tales Part 1

By Jeff Young

This is a tale with two beginnings.

The first one is the most recent.÷  It started several weeks ago.÷  I am the Activity Director at my local nursing home and one of our most beloved activities is Crochet Club.÷  These women learned to crochet on their mother"s or grandmother"s lap, or taught themselves as a child.÷  We have over 250 years of combined experience.÷  But age has taken its toll and left its mark and we struggle a little more every day.÷  Some of us struggle a little, or a lot, more than others, and some of us just plain don"t get it.÷  But we try and that"s what"s important.

So it was suggested that we weave.÷  And thus we come to the first beginning of this tale.÷  We have tried our hands at weaving before, we have used foam strips to make placemats, and we have made loop pot holders, or used this odd net looking material to make holiday dçİcor, all with the same sad results.÷  So it was suggested we try a loom.

A loom.÷  I knew looms.÷  It was the same basic principle as the foam strip weaving we had done, only the strings are pulled tight across the ends of the loom and you would get just as lost figuring out if you"re under this sting or over that one and we would end up again with the same sad results.

No, it was suggested, a real working loom, a real loom for weaving.÷  Well, I knew looms. ÷ They are huge, complicated machines that take a lifetime to learn to use.÷  And did I mention they were huge and we just don"t have a spare room for a loom.

So I started looking around.÷  I did an internet search and found a do-it-yourself, at home, with common household tools, wooden tabletop loom kit from out in Oregon.÷  I was sold.÷  How hard could it be?÷  You throw it together, you string it up, you toss the shuttle thingy back and forth, move the other thingy and the other thingy and you"re weaving.÷  And PRESTO you have a sweater or a scarf or a table runner or a whatever it is useful household item to show your friends and family and you never had to worry about whether you are over this string or under it.÷  The loom took care of it.

So I ordered it.÷  We made a big to do about it.÷  We got the ladies talking; we tracked our shipment online as it left the workshop and made it step-by-step along the old Oregon Trail.÷  Our very own loom, lovingly made by skilled artisan woodworkers was on its way to us. And when it arrived there was snow on the ground and it was bitter cold, the winds had been driving the temperature down all week.÷  It was another one of those countless forgettable days of winter when the blahs had settled in and staying in bed all day was the preferred activity. ÷ But our loom had arrived.

We broke open the box, fished out the instructions, spent the next 30 minutes hunting for our useful household screwdriver, and set to work assembling our loom.÷  One-by-one, the curiosity of residents and staff alike was peaked and they drifted in to watch as I assembled the loom.÷  I have assembled furniture before, even other kits requiring the limited use of household tools.÷  I was confident I knew what I was doing.÷  I just should have sorted the screws by size when I started, but otherwise it only took an hour and a half.÷  While the directions were competent, they were clearly written for someone who knew what he was doing.÷  But we got it together without cursing or injury and we had our very own loom, a real working loom, a finely crafted, solid wood, well-built loom.

I was amazed at how many people knew what it was just by looking at it, and how many didn"t.÷  The most common question:÷  "What are you going to do with it?"÷  What, indeed?÷  We are going to weave, I told them.÷  We are going to learn to weave.÷  And that was that.÷  I carried the loom contraption back to the office for overnight storage.÷  I got looks of bemused amazement from on-lookers as we passed by.÷  Something new was in the air.÷  Something exciting was about to begin and everyone could feel it.

As I turned out the lights to go home that night, I looked back at the loom, perched on its new rolling table, I knew we were indeed beginning a new journey and here we come to the end of the first beginning of this tale.

Dirty Roulette Tips and Tricks

Anyone who has ever watched the movie, Ocean"s Eleven; both the old Frank Sinatra version and the newer series starring George Clooney, can understand the desire to "break the bank" or "beat the boys in Vegas". Many former professional con men and gambling cheats, claim that it was the thrill of playing David to the casino"s Goliaths, as well as the money, that made cheating at roulette so much fun. The desire to stick it to the "Man" and getting away free with thousands or maybe millions of dollars lurks in the heart of many honest roulette players. This article will explore the murky world of dirty roulette tips and tricks.Online roulette has spread this exciting game even further. Along with the software the online casino provides, you can also download and use "roulette companion" applications like Routrack. Dirty Roulette Tip and Trick #1 ? Finding a Biased Roulette WheelOne of the oldest tricks is not illegal, but is not welcome in any casino. A biased wheel is any roulette table that due to some hidden manufacturing error, or from long time usage, begins to have a set pattern of winning slots or pockets. Casinos work very hard to find "bad" wheels as soon as possible and remove them from the gaming floor. But if a dealer or pit boss is tired, lazy or careless, you maybe able to spot a biased table while it is still active. If you think you have found a hot one, then stand back and observe the light board for winning numbers. Try out a few hands to test your theory before betting big.Dirty Roulette Tip and Trick #2 ? Past Posting ChipsPinching and past posting is illegal and is used by some of the most elite casino cheat teams in the world. These two skills are staged sleight of hands that would make a magician proud. The granddaddy of roulette sleight of hand moves is the Past Post. In this con, just before the ball lands, the dealer or croupier will automatically lean over the wheel to check which way the ball lands. During this split second of distraction, the con artist will switch his/her bet to the winning number or color. Another version of this is to hide a high dollar chip under a smaller one. If you lose, remove the high chip to prevent loss and if you win, you call the croupier"s attention to the "mistake".Dirty Roulette Tip and Trick #3 ? Pinching ChipsThe Pinch is where you stack a high value chip ($100) underneath a smaller value chip ($10) when placing a bet. If you win you leave the chips alone, but if you lose you stealthily remove the high value $100 chip, to limit your loss. Dirty Roulette Tip and Trick #4 ? The Croupier"s SignatureCroupiers are trained to spin the roulette ball in a random speed or order over the roulette wheel. But they are human. And like everyone else they become bored, tired and careless. This is when they can slip from their training and make easy to spot mistakes, which can give you an advantage. Plus over time, croupiers after performing thousands of spins develop "muscle memory". When this happens veteran roulette players claim that if you take the time to watch them long enough, you can determine telltale motions that you can use to cheat that particular table.Naturally using dirty roulette tips and tricks can lead you to big trouble in a real live casino, but learning how to master them to impress and amaze your friends in your weekly roulette tourney can be good for a laugh.
